Our Firefighters
Over 250 Years of History
Haddon Fire Company Co. No.1 proudly remains the second oldest volunteer fire company in continuous existence in the United States.
Major milestones in our history are:
1764 – On March 8, 26 men – being among the chief owners property and heads of families in the village – met in the Friends Meeting House (then located on what is now Haddon Avenue) to form the Friendship Fire Company of Haddonfield. Each member was required to furnish two leathern fire buckets; the company supplied six ladders and three fire hooks. (The names of some of the founding members will be known to current residents as street names in Haddonfield: Redman, Hinchman, Gill. Numerous current residents can trace their ancestry through the founding members of the Fire Company.)
1811 – Reorganization and name change to Fire Company of Haddonfield.
1857 – Reorganization and name change to Haddonfield Fire Department.
1887 – Reorganization and name change to Haddon Fire Company No.1.
The Company currently has a complement of 38 volunteer firefighters. In addition, we have 9 members, in our Explorer program, established in 2001. Interested in learning more? For information and a membership application, call 856-429-4308
