SOG 5-04  EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROCEDURES

A. Scope:

This operational guideline shall apply to the use of the “Emergency Evacuation Signal” on the

scene of a fire or other emergency.

B. Guidelines:

1. The Incident Commander will direct the Communications Center to broadcast the “emergency evacuation message” anytime an imminent hazard develops.

2. The Communications Center will transmit a 3-second alert tone, followed by “Attention all personnel on the fire ground at (location). The emergency evacuation procedure has been ordered. All apparatus will sound warning devices.”

3. All apparatus on the fire ground will sound a 30-second air horn or siren blast. This will alert all personnel to evacuate the fire building, or incident area.

4. All Division, Group, and Company Officers shall pass the order to all their personnel and evacuate them from their location.

5. The IC will immediately implement a Personal Accountability Report (PAR) to determine the safety and welfare of all the firefighting personnel.

C. Definitions:

Emergency Evacuation Signal – The “emergency evacuation signal” is a procedure designed

to alert all firefighting personnel of an impending building collapse, or deteriorating

conditions that warrant the immediate evacuation of all personnel from the building or the

area of the incident

EMERGENCY EXIT FROM FIRE BUILDING: Whenever the Officer in Charge determines that a fire building is no longer safe for interior operations, he will order the fire dispatch to sound the emergency evacuation tone and all drivers of all fire apparatus shall sound all audible devices (air horn, siren, etc.) for 30 seconds signifying that all personnel in the building are to exit immediately.  Members will observe all safety precautions while affecting the exit.
